In a significant development in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, four Naxalites, one carrying a Rs 1 lakh bounty, surrendered to the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Thursday. Among the surrenderers is a woman.
The Naxalites cited atrocities committed on tribals by Maoists and the 'inhuman and hollow' ideology of the Maoists as key reasons for their decision. The state’s effective Naxal elimination policy and Sukma police's rehabilitation drive, 'Puna Narkom' (meaning a new dawn or a new beginning in the local Gondi dialect), also influenced their choice, according to an official.
Dirdo Hidma, who had a Rs 1 lakh bounty on his head, was the Tetemadgu RPC CNM president. Another surrenderer, Sodhi Some, was a member of the Arlampalli Panchayat KAMS. The other two were lower-rung cadres. They will receive facilities according to the state government's surrender and rehabilitation policy.
