The Delhi High Court on Friday denied bail to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar, who is accused of assaulting AAP Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal.
Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta dismissed Kumar's bail plea, citing his considerable influence and no substantial grounds for granting bail. The judge noted the possibility of witness tampering or influencing evidence if Kumar were released.
In light of the serious accusations and potential influence over witnesses, the court decided against releasing Kumar on bail at this stage. The judge reaffirmed, 'Application is accordingly dismissed.'
Currently in judicial custody, Kumar was accused of assaulting Maliwal on May 13 at Chief Minister Kejriwal's official residence, leading to his arrest on May 18.
An FIR was filed against Kumar on May 16 under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal intimidation, assault with intent to disrobe, and attempted culpable homicide.
Despite Kumar's plea of false accusations and an assertion that his custody was unnecessary as the investigation was complete, the Delhi Police opposed his bail, citing ongoing investigations and a pending charge sheet expected by July 16.
