Tamil Nadu Protests Karnataka's Cauvery Water Stand

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has condemned the Karnataka government's decision to release a decreased amount of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. He announced that a meeting with legislative party leaders is scheduled for July 16 to decide the next steps in the ongoing inter-state river dispute.

Despite the total storage in Karnataka’s main dams being 75.586 TMC ft as of July 15, 2024, Tamil Nadu’s Mettur reservoir holds only 13.808 TMC ft. The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) had instructed Karnataka to release one TMC ft daily from July 12 to 31, 2024, based on monsoon projections.

Stalin stated that Karnataka's refusal to comply with the CWRC directive, citing low water levels, is a betrayal of Tamil Nadu's farmers. He emphasized that the state government would explore legal options and convene an urgent meeting to determine the next steps.
