A militant attack on an Indian Army patrol in Jammu and Kashmir killed four soldiers, including an officer, the army reported on Tuesday. This marks the latest violence in the Hindu-dominated part of the troubled Himalayan region.

The deaths bring this year's tally of Indian soldiers killed in such attacks to 11, as militant activity has shifted from the Kashmir Valley to the Jammu region in recent years. A firefight ensued after militants ambushed the foot patrol in the Doda district woods late on Monday, according to army officials.

In an official statement, the army confirmed the deployment of additional troops to the area, with operations ongoing. Both India and Pakistan claim the Himalayan region of Kashmir but administer it partially. India accuses Pakistan of training, funding, and dispatching militants across a ceasefire line into its portion of Kashmir, allegations that Pakistan denies.

The surge in militant attacks aims to restore the level of violence seen during the 1995 decade, Chief of Police R.R. Swain informed reporters. He noted a significant 'gap' exploited by militants for infiltration, asserting, 'We will deal with it.'

Historically, militant attacks in the Indian-administered region had mainly targeted Muslim-dominated Kashmir. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his condolences to the families of the deceased in Monday's attack.

Similar attacks in the Jammu region have claimed the lives of 43 soldiers over the past three years.
