The situation in the violence-hit Gandatwisa in Tripura's Dhalai district showed signs of improvement on Tuesday, with no fresh clashes reported in the last 24 hours. However, two shops in the local market were destroyed in a fire caused by a short-circuit, sparking tension among traders, police said. Four individuals were detained for violating prohibitory orders which have been in effect since the homes of roughly 300 villagers were torched by a mob on July 12, according to Dhalai Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai.
''The situation in Gandatwisa has improved with no untoward incidents reported in the last 24 hours. A fire gutted two shops in the local market due to a short circuit,” SP Rai stated.
Reaffirming that law enforcement agencies are striving to restore normalcy quickly, he added that police personnel are patrolling vulnerable areas to maintain law and order.
“For unlawful gathering at the market, four people were detained as the prohibitory orders are still in force,'' he said.
A four-member team led by Tripura Minister Tinku Roy visited the violence-hit area on Monday and encountered anger from villagers whose homes were set ablaze on July 12, following the death of a 19-year-old man during a clash between two groups.
Parameshwar Reang, a college student, was critically injured in the clash and later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala on July 12.
Four people were arrested in connection with the youth’s death, police added.
During the minister's visit, enraged villagers vandalized the office of the Gandatwisa sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), alleging police and local administration inaction when the mob attacked their houses last week.
A video clip on social media showed an angry youth informing the minister that as many as 11 scheduled wedding ceremonies in the area were canceled due to the arson.
Roy, the social welfare minister, assured the upset villagers that compensation would be provided to all affected families and that adequate security measures would be implemented to prevent future incidents.
