The victim, aged 45, sustained 40% burn injuries and is battling for her life in a local hospital. The family initially alleged that Hemlata set herself on fire due to police inaction, a claim the authorities have firmly denied.

SSP Sanjiv Suman stated that the police were actively trying to mediate the dispute when the son, identified as Gaurav, suddenly used a lighter to set his mother alight. Two officers were injured while trying to save her. Action had already been taken on a prior family complaint regarding the property issue.
