The assault, which took place on Monday in the Wadi al-Kabir district of the capital, is unusual for the generally secure and wealthy Sunni-dominated Gulf region. The attackers targeted Shi'ite worshippers during their annual rituals and engaged in gunfire exchanges with Omani security forces through the night.

Islamic State released a video of the attack late on Tuesday via its Telegram channel. The group reported over 30 additional casualties among Shi'ite Muslims and Omani forces, including a police officer.
