BJP leader Manikanth Rathod has been arrested in connection with the theft of rice meant for the Anna Bhagya scheme, police reported on Wednesday.
The Shahapur police apprehended Rathod from his residence in the district headquarter town of Kalaburagi.
Sources indicate Rathod is involved in the theft of 6,077 quintals of rice, worth more than Rs two crore, from a government warehouse in Shahapur in Yadgir district.
The BJP leader ignored a police summons for questioning, leading to his arrest.
Rathod had run in the 2023 assembly election on a BJP ticket against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's son, Priyank Kharge, but lost.
The Anna Bhagya scheme provides 10 kg of food grains each month to family members belonging to economically weaker sections of society.
