Historic Elevation: First Judge from Manipur Sworn into Supreme Court
Justice N Kotiswar Singh, previously Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, has been sworn in as the first Supreme Court judge from Manipur. Alongside him, Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court R Mahadevan was also elevated to the apex court. The swearing-in was administered by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, bringing the Supreme Court to its full strength of 34 judges.

Justice N Kotiswar Singh, who previously served as the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, has marked a historic milestone by becoming the first judge from Manipur to be elevated to the Supreme Court. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday, administered by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud.
Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court R Mahadevan was also sworn in as a judge of the apex court during the event. With their induction, the Supreme Court has now reached its sanctioned full strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
The Supreme Court will continue to function with its full capacity until Justice Hima Kohli's retirement on September 1, 2024, followed shortly by CJI Chandrachud, who will step down on November 10 this year. The appointments followed the Supreme Court collegium's recommendation, which was cleared by the Centre on July 16.
