Police have detained at least three individuals in Khandwa city, Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly waving a Palestinian flag during a Muharram procession, authorities announced on Thursday.
In Rajgarh district, police apprehended a minor on similar charges but released him after questioning. The tazia processions were part of national Muharram observances, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain Ali.
Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders filed complaints, alleging the flag-waving aimed to incite communal discord. Khandwa Superintendent of Police Manoj Rai confirmed ongoing investigations, pledging adherence to legal protocols. Eyewitnesses reported anti-Israel slogans, but police denied militant group affiliations.
In related incidents, Jharkhand police arrested a 28-year-old man for a similar act in Dumka district, and West Bengal's BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for police action over a reported flag-waving incident in Murshidabad.
