Police in Thane, Maharashtra, have registered a case against a woman for allegedly torturing and branding her nine-month-old daughter with a hot object, an official revealed on Friday.

The accused, a beggar living in Bhatwadi, reportedly used to regularly beat her baby. Neighbors lodged a complaint leading to the case being registered on Thursday, informed Sub-Inspector Niteen Hange of Shrinagar police station.

The injured toddler has been moved to a child care center in Dombivli, near Thane. The woman faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. The investigation continues.
