Longtime US Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, who championed federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence and recognized Juneteenth as a national holiday, has died at 74.

Her chief of staff, Lillie Conley, confirmed Friday night that Jackson Lee, who had pancreatic cancer, passed away.

Jackson Lee, a Democrat representing Houston since 1995, had previously battled breast cancer and announced her pancreatic cancer diagnosis on June 2. 'The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me,' she said then.

First elected in 1995, Jackson Lee succeeded Barbara Jordan in Houston's district and joined the high-profile House Judiciary Committee. She became a recognized advocate for women and minorities, notably leading the first rewrite of the Violence Against Women Act in nearly a decade.

She was instrumental in the 2021 initiative to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday, marking the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom.

A native of Queens, New York, and a Yale graduate, Jackson Lee was a judge in Houston before her congressional career. She was a fierce advocate for gay rights and an early opponent of the Iraq War.

Jackson Lee consistently won reelection with ease. Despite a failed mayoral bid in 2023, she went on to win the Democratic nomination for the 2024 general election. Her tenure faced controversies, including stepping down from leadership positions in 2019 following a lawsuit over mishandled sexual assault complaints.

Jackson Lee's career was marked by her unwavering commitment to social justice and equality.
