The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court has mandated the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to examine the alleged extensive smuggling of areca nuts from Myanmar into Mizoram, a court official revealed on Saturday.
The directive followed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by social activist Vanramchhuangi, also known as Ruatfela Nu. The bench, comprising Justice Zothankhuma and Justice Marli Vankung, issued the order on Tuesday. According to the court, the nature of these commercial transactions necessitates a fair and impartial inquiry conducted by the CBI.
The court remarked that the state police admitted their inability to conduct a comprehensive investigation due to the international scope of the smuggling activities, which originate in Myanmar. Consequently, the CBI has been tasked with investigating the case and pursuing all necessary actions to reach a logical conclusion.
In her petition, Ruatfela Nu argued that the Mizoram government has failed to address the smuggling issue adequately. She called for CBI intervention, accusing the state government of a passive approach towards smuggling activities through the Champhai district in south Mizoram.
Over recent years, the smuggling of Burmese areca nuts has evolved into a significant political issue, highlighting alleged collusion between politicians, high-ranking officials, and smugglers. As a result, local areca nut farmers have resorted to self-help measures, including setting up checkpoints and burning confiscated smuggled goods.
