Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Colombian Bishop Óscar Augusto Múnera. Múnera was cited in a book about alleged sexual abuse within Colombia's clergy. The Vatican's brief statement did not provide specific reasons for the bishop's resignation.
In the book by investigative journalists Juan Pablo Barrientos and Miguel Estupiñán, Múnera is accused of abusing a young man in 2005. The book lists over 500 members of Colombia's Roman Catholic clergy alleged to have committed acts of sexual abuse. However, no formal charges have been brought against Múnera by Colombian authorities.
Múnera has not commented on the accusations. Similarly, Colombia's Bishops Conference has refrained from commenting on the reasons for his resignation.
