UP Governor Pardons Ex-BJP MLA Convicted for Murder

Former BJP MLA Udaybhan Karwariya, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of SP MLA Jawahar Yadav, is set to be released from Naini Central Jail. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel granted the pardon, invoking Article 161 of the Indian Constitution, following recommendations of premature release due to Karwariya's good conduct.

Former BJP MLA Udaybhan Karwariya, who is serving a life sentence in Naini Central Jail for the murder of Samajwadi Party MLA Jawahar Yadav, will soon be released. The release follows a pardon by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, utilizing the powers under Article 161 of the Indian Constitution.

The governor's decision came after accepting a recommendation for Karwariya's premature release by the state government. Article 161 allows a governor to grant pardons, reprieves, respites, or remissions of punishments, as well as to suspend, remit, or commute sentences.

Recommendations for Karwariya's release were based on his good conduct in jail, cited by Prayagraj's senior superintendent of police and district magistrate. The order for the pardon was issued on Friday. The Prison Administration and Reforms Section of Uttar Pradesh has stated that Karwariya should be released upon presenting two sureties and a bond of the same amount.

Senior Jail Superintendent of Naini Central Jail, Rang Bahadur Patel, noted that the file regarding Karwariya's release had not yet arrived, but action would be taken as soon as it does. Karwariya was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 4, 2019, by the Additional Sessions Judge of Prayagraj for the 1996 murder.
