A car was vandalized and its occupants were assaulted by 'kanwariyas' on the Haridwar-Delhi national highway, according to police reports on the inaugural day of the annual kanwar yatra.
Devotees alleged that a 'kanwar,' a decorated bamboo stick with a pot filled with water from the Ganga, was made impure when the car brushed against it near the Bajheri cut in the Chhapar area. However, no kanwariya confirmed that their 'kanwar' had contacted the vehicle.
The yatra began on the first day of Sawan (Shravan) and will conclude on August 2. Circle Officer Raju Kumar Sab said the damaged vehicle has been seized. Efforts are underway to identify the driver and passengers, with CCTV footage being reviewed.
