Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr declared on Monday that his country cannot waver in its stance on the South China Sea. However, he emphasized that Manila would seek ways to reduce tensions in the disputed waters.

In his State of the Nation Address, Marcos underscored that maritime disputes should be resolved diplomatically under a rules-based international order. 'Faced with challenges to our territorial sovereignty, we will assert our rights and interests in a fair and peaceful manner,' he stated, receiving a standing ovation from Congress.

Marcos' comments followed a 'provisional arrangement' with China to facilitate resupply missions to the contested Second Thomas Shoal. While neither side provided extensive details, the Philippines confirmed that this arrangement does not compromise national positions. The Chinese foreign ministry echoed this stance, with both nations agreeing to manage their maritime differences peacefully.
