The Tripura Human Rights Commission has served notices to the Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan and Dhalai District Magistrate Saju Vaheed regarding recent violence in Gandatwisa, Tripura. The Commission has demanded reports on steps taken against those responsible for arson and looting households in the area earlier this month.
On July 12, a mob set multiple houses on fire following a clash between two groups that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man. Before launching a formal inquiry, the Commission seeks information on actions by law enforcement agencies to apprehend the culprits, the sections under which cases have been registered, and the number of arrests made.
Additionally, Dhalai's DM has been asked to investigate through civil agencies and report on rehabilitation efforts for the victims. Justice S.C. Das emphasized that any negligence by public servants in preventing human rights violations is actionable. The preliminary report is required within three weeks, with the commission set to review the matter on August 8.
