Maharashtra Women Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar on Thursday met the family of a 30-year-old Navi Mumbai woman who was brutally raped and killed earlier this month in Thane district. The panel has since demanded the death sentence for the perpetrators.

The victim, who had an ongoing domestic dispute with her in-laws, left her home on July 6 and sought refuge at a hilltop temple in Shilphata, Thane. She was allegedly raped and murdered by three individuals, including the temple priest. The suspects have been arrested, according to police.

Chakankar visited the victim's family and later held a briefing with the police team investigating the case. She emphasized that the investigation is advancing appropriately and stressed the importance of the death penalty for the arrested individuals to curb such heinous crimes in the future. Additionally, she pressed for a swift trial to ensure timely justice for the victim's family. She urged more awareness of One Stop Centres (OSCs) for women facing domestic violence.
