A joint delegation of 10 autonomous councils from the northeastern states met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday to seek intervention on a long-standing issue concerning tribal self-governing bodies.
Led by Pramod Boro, chief executive member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) of Assam, the delegation submitted a memorandum to Shah, urging the quick passage of the Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill, 2019, with necessary modifications. The bill aims to appoint a finance commission to review the financial positions of district, village, and municipal councils and propose tax distribution solutions.
Shah assured the delegation that all issues related to the bill would be resolved within a month. He also promised to form a committee under the Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai to address the concerns raised by the 10 Sixth Schedule councils in the northeast.
