Pita Limjaroenrat Seeks to Break Thailand's Vicious Political Cycle
Thailand's main opposition figurehead, Pita Limjaroenrat, is optimistic about his Move Forward party's survival amid legal challenges. He criticizes the conservative establishment for undermining elected officials. The Constitutional Court's decision on Move Forward's policy could lead to the party's dissolution. A separate ethics complaint could ban party leaders for life.
Thailand's main opposition figurehead, Pita Limjaroenrat, expressed optimism that his election-winning Move Forward party will survive an upcoming dissolution case. Nevertheless, he warned about the significant impact of another investigation that could decimate the popular progressive group.
Pita, who led Move Forward to victory in last year's election but was blocked from taking power by army-appointed lawmakers, said Thailand's conservative establishment was flexing its muscle to contain popular leaders. "This is the fifth vicious cycle in 20 years. It's a tactic the conservative elites have used to keep elected officials at bay," Pita told Reuters during an interview in his parliamentary office.
In January, the Constitutional Court ruled that Move Forward's plan to amend a law against royal insults was an effort to undermine the monarchy, forcing the party to drop its campaign. Now, the party faces potential dissolution over the same issue, with a verdict due on Aug. 7. Move Forward denies any wrongdoing.
