Assam Eyes Defence Corridor and Economic Boost

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has positively responded to a proposal for setting up India's third defence corridor in Assam. Sarma also discussed flood issues, funding for a satellite township, and other development projects with Union Ministers in New Delhi.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has responded positively to the proposal of setting up the country's third defence corridor in the state.

Sarma met Singh during his recent visit to New Delhi and discussed the issue of establishing a defence corridor in Assam, following those in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

'We are keen that Assam becomes a defence production hub, especially after the establishment of a semiconductor unit in the state,' Sarma said at a press conference, adding that the proposal is under 'advanced consideration' due to its sensitivity.

Highlighting the potential economic impact, Sarma noted that several evaluations are needed before a final decision. Additionally, the Union Budget has recognized for the first time that Assam's floods are exacerbated by water from outside the country, with the Centre ready to provide comprehensive support.

Sarma also met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding funding for a satellite township near Guwahati, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address issues related to Aadhaar cards, which were blocked during biometrics updates for the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
