A 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing over Rs 24 lakh from a safe in the Aizawl district court, a police officer confirmed on Saturday.

The accused, working as a ''proxy worker,'' is said to have broken into the special Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act court, using a hacksaw blade to cut the safe's hinges on June one. A ''proxy worker'' is a substitute for the original employee; in this case, the man's father. The accused had fled after stealing Rs 24,87,084, according to Aizawl Superintendent of Police Rahool Alwal during a press conference.

He was detained at a friend's residence in South Mizoram's Lunglei town and subsequently brought back to Aizawl earlier this week. The stolen money was used on luxurious stays at posh hotels in Aizawl, a Rs 2.5 lakh two-wheeler, and costly garments, the police officer disclosed.

Additionally, the accused deposited Rs 16.5 lakh in his bank account. During the arrest, Rs 36,000 cash was recovered, and the individual is now in police custody, Alwal added.
