A Family's Grief: Cross-Border Coordination Brings Closure

Pakistani authorities have repatriated the body of Harash Nagotra, an Indian man who allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Chenab river after suffering financial losses. His family expressed gratitude to the Indian government and security forces for their efforts in bringing his body back for the last rites.

Pakistani authorities on Saturday handed over the body of an Indian man to Indian officials after he allegedly ended his life by jumping into the Chenab river in Jammu, officials confirmed.

Harash Nagotra's family conveyed their appreciation to the Indian government, the army, and the Border Security Force for successfully repatriating his body. Nagotra, a resident of a border village in the Akhnoor sector, went missing on June 11. His motorcycle was found on the riverbank, leading his family to file a missing persons report the next day.

Preliminary investigations suggested that Nagotra had committed suicide after incurring a financial loss exceeding Rs 80,000 in an online gaming application, according to officials. Confirmation of Nagotra's death came through a WhatsApp message on July 13 from a Pakistani official, who communicated the discovery of his body in a canal in Sialkot, Punjab. The message included identifying documents and photographs of the deceased.

In a desperate plea, Nagotra's family appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the return of his body for last rites. Their request was fulfilled when the body was handed over to them at the Octroi post near Suchetgarh on Saturday evening, after the necessary legal formalities were completed by both sides. The body was subsequently taken to a government medical hospital for post-mortem, with last rites scheduled for Sunday.
