Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday called for the removal of media restrictions within Parliament premises, urging Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to grant journalists freedom of movement.
Gandhi criticized the existing limitations, likening them to a cage. He highlighted that media persons who previously had access to members of parliament near entry and exit points are now confined to a designated enclosure.
In response, Birla reminded Gandhi of parliamentary procedures, suggesting such issues should be discussed privately. Opposition leaders, including Trinamool Congress's Derek O'Brien, stood in solidarity with media, condemning the restrictions as censorship.
Birla later met with journalists, promising to address their concerns and improve their working conditions.
