The U.S. announced Monday it will send $1.7 billion in military aid to Ukraine, comprising munitions for air defense systems, artillery, mortars, and anti-tank and anti-ship missiles.

The package includes $1.5 billion in funding for longer-term contracts through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and $200 million in immediate aid from Pentagon stockpiles.

The additional weapons come just over two weeks after the NATO summit in Washington, where President Joe Biden announced a Patriot missile battery to Ukraine. NATO members also introduced a program to provide reliable military aid and an “irreversible” path to NATO membership for Ukraine.

The latest package includes air defense interceptors, rockets, artillery, and anti-tank weapons, drawn directly from presidential drawdown authority. The defense systems include munitions for NASAMS and HIMARS.

The Pentagon noted that longer-term weapons would enhance Ukraine's air defenses and other military capabilities. Secure communications systems, commercial satellite imagery services, and demolitions equipment are also being provided.

Despite the announcement, the Defense Department did not specify which systems would immediately be sent or delayed by contracts. Since the beginning of Russia's invasion in 2022, the U.S. has provided more than $55.4 billion in security aid to Ukraine. White House national security spokesman John Kirby highlighted that this is the ninth aid package since April, aiding Ukraine in fortifying defenses and repelling Russian forces.
