The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has mobilized one team with three more en route to Kerala's Wayanad to spearhead rescue and relief efforts in response to recent landslides that have claimed at least 45 lives, officials confirmed.
Armed with tools such as pole and wire cutting machines, inflatable boats, and basic medicines, the specialized rescue teams are set to operate in the floodwater-affected region. Currently, one team is active on-site while additional teams are being dispatched from Kerala, Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu, and Bengaluru.
NDRF Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Mohsen Shahedi stated that these teams would support the local government and other deployed agencies in their rescue missions. Each NDRF team consists of approximately 30 personnel. To date, the first NDRF team has recovered 21 bodies, rescued one individual and evacuated 74 people from the disaster-stricken area. The landslides, ignited by heavy rains, have left hundreds feared trapped under debris in the hilly Wayanad district. Alongside the NDRF, rescue operations involve the Kerala fire force, police, forest department, revenue, Army, and local self-government agencies.
