Two days after the body of a 20-year-old woman was found near Uran railway station in Navi Mumbai, police have arrested a man from Karnataka for allegedly killing her, a senior official confirmed.

The accused, Dawood Shaikh, was apprehended from the Shahapur area of Gulbarga, Karnataka, said a deputy commissioner of police.

The victim's father had lodged a police complaint against Shaikh in 2019, which led to the registration of a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Deepak Sakore noted that the victim and Shaikh had been in contact and met on the day of the murder. A heated argument may have led to the crime, but the exact motive remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.

The woman's body was discovered around 2 am on Saturday following a missing persons report filed on July 25. The victim had taken a half-day leave from her job in Belapur. A case was registered under section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against an unidentified person, and eight teams were deployed to trace the accused.

The police, after detaining several suspects, gathered information that led them to Shaikh. The autopsy confirmed that the victim died of stab wounds. Sakore stated that Shaikh had resided in Uran for some time but relocated to Karnataka after the POCSO case was registered against him in 2019. Shaikh, who worked as a driver, remained in contact with the victim. The victim's mobile phone has yet to be recovered, and efforts are underway to locate it. Shaikh has confessed to the crime, and arrangements are being made to bring him back to Navi Mumbai for further questioning.
