From August 2 to 20, 2024, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) Darjeeling, under the Ministry of Defence, is leading a pioneering Divyangjan expedition from Kanchenjunga National Park in India to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. The expedition was officially flagged off by Smt. Dipti Mohil Chawia, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, in New Delhi on July 30, 2024.

The expedition team features notable members, including Shri Uday Kumar, a 91% above-knee amputee and Air Warrior, who has previously scaled Mt. Rhenock (16,500 ft) in Kanchenjunga National Park, setting a remarkable example for the upcoming challenge. The team also includes Principal of HMI Group Captain Jai Kishan, Capt. Shruti S. Chanaveeragoudra, Sub Mahendra Kumar Yadav, Shri Pawel Sharma, and Ms. Sulaxchana Tamang.

In a symbolic gesture to mark India's 78th Independence Day, the expedition will display a 7,800-square foot national flag, celebrating India's pride and unity. The team aims to make history as the first Divyangjan expedition to hoist the largest Indian flag atop Kilimanjaro, underscoring the strength, determination, and unity of the Indian people.

This historic expedition is designed to inspire youth, Divyangjan, and underprivileged individuals to pursue their dreams despite challenges, embodying the spirit of perseverance and achievement.
