Chinese Cargo Ship Detained in Odisha Over Monetary Dispute

A Chinese cargo ship has been detained by the Paradip Port Trust authorities in Odisha following a 'vessel arrest' order from the Orissa High Court due to a monetary dispute. The court's decision stems from an unpaid sum of Rs 99.81 lakh by the ship's owner to the cargo dispatching company.

The Paradip Port Trust authorities in Odisha have detained a Chinese cargo ship following an 'arrest' order from the High Court due to a monetary dispute, an official revealed on Wednesday. Under admiralty law, a ship can be arrested to enforce maritime claims arising from ownership, construction, possession, management, operation, or trading of any ship.

The Orissa High Court's order resulted from a financial disagreement between the ship's owner and the company that dispatched the cargo of low sulfur marine gasoil. The ship will remain detained at the port until further court instructions.

The cargo-sending company informed the High Court that the ship’s owner had failed to pay Rs 99.81 lakh. After reviewing the submitted documents and hearing arguments, the court issued the arrest order on Monday.
