In a sharp critique, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has challenged the Yogi Adityanath government over the release of former BJP MLA Udaybhan Karwariya. This follows a pardon by Governor Anandiben Patel, which Yadav suggests undermines the government’s proclaimed zero tolerance stance on crime.
Karwariya was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 4, 2019, for the 1996 murder of Samajwadi Party MLA Jawahar Yadav. However, he was released on July 25 from Naini Jail, Prayagraj, after a gubernatorial pardon. The pardon cited Karwariya's good behavior as the basis for his early release.
Samajwadi Party MLA Vijma Yadav, the widow of the murdered MLA, voiced her fears and frustrations in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, questioning the government’s commitment to justice and pointing out that AK-47 wielders were being freed while innocent people languish in prisons.
