Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran early on Wednesday morning, drawing threats of revenge on Israel and fuelling further concerns that the Gaza conflict could escalate into a wider Middle East war. Both Hamas and Iran's Revolutionary Guards confirmed Haniyeh's death.

Although widely suspected to be carried out by Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government neither claimed responsibility nor commented on the assassination. Senior Hamas official Khalil Al-Hayya said Haniyeh was killed by a missile strike at a state guesthouse in Tehran. The investigation is ongoing.

Haniyeh had been instrumental in international diplomacy for Hamas as war raged in Gaza following the group's attack on Israel on Oct. 7. His assassination followed a similar Israeli strike in Beirut, killing Hezbollah's top military commander. These events further diminish the prospects for a ceasefire in Gaza.
