A local court has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison, while his mother and father were sentenced to seven years each, for killing his wife over a dowry dispute in 2018, authorities reported on Friday.

Ballia Superintendent of Police Vikrant Veer disclosed that Additional District Judge Ravi Kiran Singh's court found Dharmendra Verma, along with his parents Bechan Prasad Verma and Manju Devi, guilty of orchestrating and executing the murder.

In addition to their jail terms, each convict was fined Rs 3,000, according to police officials.

The case was brought by Krishna Singh of Buxar district in Bihar, whose daughter Shashikala married Dharmendra Verma of Kopwa Bahadurpur village in February 2012.

On the night of September 13-14, 2018, Shashikala was allegedly set on fire using kerosene due to a dowry demand, with her family being informed five days later.

Krishna Singh reported the incident to the Fefna Police Station, initiating an FIR under sections 304B and 498 of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Following the investigation, police filed a charge sheet against the accused, resulting in their conviction and sentencing.
