The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, has extended the deadline for submitting comments on the proposed amendments to Rule 3 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. The new deadline for submissions is 30 August 2024, an extension from the original date of 29 July 2024.
The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 require that packaged goods display essential information, including the manufacturer’s name and address, country of origin, common name of the commodity, net quantity, manufacture date, MRP, unit sale price, best before/use by date (for items that could become unfit for consumption), and consumer care details.
Currently, Rule 3 exempts packaged commodities exceeding 25 kilograms or 25 liters from these requirements, with exceptions for cement, fertilizer, and agricultural produce sold in bags over 50 kilograms. This exemption is based on the assumption that retail-packaged commodities are generally under 25 kilograms.
In response to the evolving market landscape, which now includes both offline and online platforms, the Department is considering amendments to establish consistent labeling standards across all packaged commodities. The proposed changes aim to ensure uniformity and fairness in product information, benefiting consumers by providing complete and accurate details.
The Department has received numerous suggestions and requests from various federations, associations, and stakeholders for an extension to the comment period, leading to the revised deadline.
Comments on the proposed amendment can be submitted via email to ashutosh.agarwal13@nic.in, dirwmca@nic.in, or mk.naik72@gov.in. The proposed amendment details are available at the following link:
