President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the Conference of Governors at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi today, August 2, 2024. The conference, scheduled to span two days, will address key issues influencing centre-state relations and advancing welfare schemes for the populace.
In her opening remarks, President Murmu highlighted the importance of the conference’s agenda in achieving national goals. She expressed confidence that the discussions would provide valuable insights for participants to enhance their functions.
The inaugural session was also addressed by Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, and Union Minister for Home Affairs Shri Amit Shah. Vice President Dhankhar emphasized the Governors' role in informing the public about social welfare schemes and recent developments. Prime Minister Modi urged Governors to serve as effective bridges between the Centre and States, particularly in tribal areas, and to engage with marginalized communities. Home Minister Shah outlined the conference’s agenda and encouraged Governors to visit Vibrant Villages and Aspirational Districts to boost development and instill public confidence.
President Murmu remarked on the beginning of a new era in the justice system with the introduction of three new laws: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. She stressed the need for improved coordination among central agencies and called on Governors to foster this coordination in their states.
The President also underscored the significance of quality higher education as a driver of personal and social advancement. She urged Governors to support reforms in education, particularly in their roles as chancellors of state universities.
Addressing the development of underprivileged and border areas, President Murmu encouraged Governors to propose strategies for inclusive development, particularly for tribal communities. She highlighted the 'MY Bharat' campaign as a means to harness youth energy for positive change and urged Governors to promote this initiative.
Further, the President emphasized the 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' campaign's role in fostering national unity and urged Governors to enhance this spirit. She also advocated for environmental initiatives like the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign and natural farming practices to improve soil fertility and farmers' incomes.
The conference will feature breakaway sessions where sub-groups of Governors will discuss specific agenda items. Union Ministers and officials from relevant ministries will also participate. The observations and suggestions from these sessions will be presented to the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, and other attendees during the concluding session on August 3, 2024.
