Twenty-one Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy have been successfully repatriated and are now on their way to Chennai from Colombo, according to a statement by the Indian High Commission on Friday.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo and the Indian Consulate in Jaffna, in coordination with Sri Lankan authorities, secured the release of the fishermen. The repatriation is seen as a positive step towards resolving ongoing tensions.

'Returning home! 21 Indian fishermen have been successfully repatriated and are on their way to Chennai from Colombo,' the High Commission posted on X, accompanying a photograph of the released fishermen. The contentious issue of fishing rights in the Palk Strait often sees tensions between the two nations, as evidenced by recent incidents.
