Deadly Explosion at Mogadishu Beach Restaurant Claims Lives and Injures Hundreds
An explosion at a popular beach restaurant in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, killed at least 37 civilians and injured 212. The attack was attributed to al Shabaab militants. Officials and security forces are reinforcing the city's security measures following this tragedy, marking the deadliest attack since October 2022's twin car bombings.
At least 37 civilians were killed and 212 were injured in an explosion at a popular beach restaurant in the Somali capital late on Friday, Health Minister Ali Haji said. The government has blamed the militant Islamist group al Shabaab for the attack.
During a press conference, Haji mentioned that 11 of the injured individuals were in critical condition. This incident is the deadliest in Somalia since twin car bombs detonated near a busy market intersection in October 2022, killing at least 100 people and wounding 300 others.
Police spokesperson Abdifatah Aden reported that one soldier was killed during the assault. One attacker detonated himself while three others were killed by security forces, and one attacker was captured alive.
