Ukraine Denies Involvement in Mali Conflict Amid Diplomatic Fallout

Mali severed diplomatic ties following comments from a Ukrainian spokesperson. Ukraine has flatly denied any role in the July conflict in northern Mali, which led to casualties among Malian soldiers and Wagner Group fighters. Ukraine criticized Mali's decision to cut diplomatic ties, calling it 'short-sighted and hasty.' The reaction follows remarks made by Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine's military intelligence, suggesting Malian rebels had received information to carry out the attack.

In his comments published on July 29, Yusov did not directly confirm Ukraine's involvement in the Skirmishes. Ukraine's foreign ministry expressed disappointment over Mali's stance, arguing the decision was made without adequately investigating the incident's particulars.

'Ukraine unconditionally adheres to international law and respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries,' the ministry stated, reserving the right to take necessary political and diplomatic measures in response to Mali's actions. The conflict in northern Mali reportedly led to significant casualties, marking one of the heaviest defeats for Wagner since its involvement in Mali began two years ago.
