Cow vigilante Sonu Sarpanch, who was shot at by cattle smugglers two months ago in Nuh, died in Medanta Hospital last night, police confirmed on Monday.

Nuh Police handed over his body to his family after completing the post-mortem in Gurugram, sources added.

Reportedly, Sonu, a native of Rewari district, was attacked by cattle smugglers in the early hours of June 15 on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway near Mahu-Chopta village. An FIR was initially registered at Ferozpur Jhirka police station, now upgraded to include a murder charge following Sonu's death, police disclosed.

On June 15, cow vigilantes pursued a cattle smuggler's vehicle on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway, leading to a chase. The smugglers' jeep overturned near Mau-Chopta village, and while attempting to flee, one was apprehended by the vigilantes. Sonu reportedly caught another smuggler, who then opened fire, critically injuring him, officials said.

Authorities stated that Sonu was rushed to a private hospital in Faridabad, but later transferred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where he passed away Sunday night.

An FIR had already been filed, with a murder charge added. Inspector Aman Kumar, SHO of Ferozpur Jhirka police station, mentioned that the police are continuing their investigation.
