India Closely Monitors Evolving Situation in Bangladesh

India is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Bangladesh and has been in continuous contact with the Indian community there through diplomatic missions. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha about the developments, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's sudden visit to India and the increased alertness at the border.

India is keeping a vigilant eye on the situation concerning minorities in Bangladesh and remains in constant communication with the Indian community through its diplomatic missions, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar updated the MPs regarding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's urgent request to visit India. He indicated that India's border forces have been instructed to stay exceptionally alert given the complex and evolving circumstances in Bangladesh.

Jaishankar mentioned that there are about 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, with around 9,000 being students, most of whom returned to India in July. On August 5, amid demonstrations in Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina reportedly decided to resign and sought immediate permission to visit India. She arrived in Delhi the following evening. The situation in Bangladesh continues to develop, and Indian authorities remain in close contact with the Indian community there through diplomatic channels.
