KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has assured residents of Umdoni Local Municipality that his department will take decisive action to restore good governance and improve basic service delivery.
This commitment follows a three-week protest by the community against perceived deficiencies in service delivery and alleged corruption within the municipality. On Monday, demonstrators blockaded the municipal offices, highlighting their frustration with the municipality's leadership.
Buthelezi expressed deep concern over the council's failure to address the issues raised by residents and its lack of action on a Section 106 forensic investigation conducted by the department in 2018. The investigation's recommendations have yet to be implemented, contributing to a negative perception of the municipality's commitment to tackling corruption.
"The council's inaction regarding the forensic investigation undermines trust and suggests a lack of seriousness about addressing corruption," Buthelezi stated.
The MEC has pledged to write to the council speaker to arrange an urgent meeting aimed at resolving the community's concerns. He emphasized that transparency and accountability are essential for rebuilding trust and ensuring effective service delivery.
Buthelezi urged the municipality's Executive Committee (Exco) to provide proper oversight and prevent unresolved issues from lingering. He also called on the community to allow due process in investigating the corruption allegations.
"The Executive Committee must actively address these issues and ensure they are handled promptly and effectively. It is crucial that we follow appropriate procedures to ensure justice and restore trust," Buthelezi said.
The MEC reiterated his commitment to supporting municipalities across the province to ensure they operate effectively. He warned that the department will take necessary actions if municipalities fail to act in the best interest of residents.
"Resolving these issues is a priority. Every effort will be made to ensure that the municipality functions effectively and meets the needs of the community," Buthelezi added.
