A Chinese American scholar, Shujun Wang, was convicted on Tuesday for utilizing his reputation as a pro-democracy activist to gather information on dissidents and relay it to his homeland's government.

The verdict, delivered by a federal jury in New York, revealed that Wang had lived a double life for over a decade under the behest of China's Ministry of State Security.

Prosecutors disclosed that Wang deceived pro-democracy activists to gain their trust and later reported their activities to China. Convicted of conspiring to act as a foreign agent without notifying the attorney general, Wang continues to plead not guilty. Wang's attorneys have yet to comment on the conviction.
