Police have registered an FIR against nearly 30 people for allegedly blocking a road after an accident in Navi Mumbai that resulted in the death of an auto-rickshaw occupant and injured another person, an official said Thursday.
Around 7:15 AM on Wednesday, a trailer on GTI Road in the Nhava Sheva area collided with an auto-rickshaw. Bharat Rama Thakur (52), a local resident, died from the injuries, while another occupant was hospitalized.
Later, between 2 PM and 4 PM, almost 30 locals from nearby villages gathered on JNPT Road, staging a 'rasta roko' (roadblock) and demanding the driver responsible be handed over to them. The police detained the trailer driver, Amjad Rafique Khan (42), and booked him under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. However, the protesters continued their blockade for a couple of hours. Police registered an FIR against the 30 protesters under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 189(2) (unlawful assembly) and 126(2) (wrongful restraint) and the Maharashtra Police Act.
