In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court on Friday stayed the ban imposed by a Mumbai college on wearing hijabs, burqas, caps, and naqabs on campus, asserting that girl students should have the freedom to choose their attire.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar reprimanded the Chembur Trombay Education Society, which operates the 'N G Acharya and D K Marathe College,' for issuing such a circular. Justice Kumar questioned how the college was empowering female students by dictating their clothing, stressing the importance of freedom of choice and criticizing the imposition of such rules by educational institutions.
The Supreme Court’s decision has reignited the debate on religious attire in educational settings, which remains unresolved at the national level.
