The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam.
Noting that Sisodia had been in custody for around 17 months without the trial commencing, the Court emphasized that prolonged incarceration before being found guilty should not be used as a form of punishment without trial.
The Court reiterated that the right to a speedy trial and liberty are sacrosanct, adding that citizens should not have to navigate through multiple legal hurdles for their fundamental rights. This ruling overturns the Delhi High Court's earlier decision to deny bail.
