The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has called for responses from several authorities, including the National Mission for Clean Ganga and the district magistrate of Jaunpur, about the worsening state of the Adi Ganga Gomti river in Uttar Pradesh.
The tribunal initiated the action after taking suo motu cognisance of a media report that highlighted the river's severe drying and chemical pollution, which resulted in a massive fish die-off.
''The news item raises a substantial issue relating to compliance with environmental norms, especially the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act and the Environment Protection Act,'' stated NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava. The bench, also comprising Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel, has involved multiple authorities in the matter, tasking them to submit their responses by October 8.
