Bangladesh Chief Justice Steps Down Amid Student Protests
Chief Justice of Bangladesh Supreme Court, Obaidul Hassan, announces resignation following protests by students demanding his and Appellate Division judges' resignation. The decision was made after consulting President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Army personnel were deployed to maintain order as protests intensified at the Supreme Court premises.
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan of the Bangladesh Supreme Court announced his resignation on Saturday amid mounting protests by students, according to media reports.
Protesters from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement had issued an ultimatum demanding the chief justice and Appellate Division judges resign by 1 pm. Hassan, 65, revealed his decision after consulting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Earlier in the day, the chief justice called a full court meeting, which was postponed following threats from students to besiege the High Court premises. As protests escalated, Bangladesh Army personnel were deployed to ensure order.
