Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday assured that the force would ensure the accused in the alleged sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor received the maximum punishment if found guilty in court.
The woman's body was discovered inside a seminar hall of a government-run hospital in north Kolkata on Friday. A preliminary autopsy confirmed she was sexually assaulted before being killed.
Goyal stated an SIT had been formed, and the accused was arrested based on circumstantial evidence and testimonies from other doctors present during the night shift. He emphasized that the investigation would be transparent and, if necessary, could be transferred to another agency at the family's request.
