Members of a Hindu right-wing outfit assaulted a group of people living near a railway station here, claiming they were Bangladeshi infiltrators, officials said Saturday.
An FIR has been lodged against the outfit's leader in connection with the Friday incident, as police confirmed the victims are not Bangladeshis.
Ghaziabad Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra stated, ''Those living in the shanties are from Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh), not Bangladesh.''
Mishra added that the National Security Act (NSA) may be invoked against the attackers.
The attack occurred near Guldhar railway station when Hindu Raksha Dal president Bhupendra 'Pinky' Chowdhary and 20 supporters vandalized the temporary shelters.
ACP (Kavinagar) Abhishek Srivastav said the investigation revealed the victims were wrongly accused of being illegal immigrants.
Sub-Inspector Sanjiv Kumar filed an FIR at Madhuban Bapudham police station after observing the assault.
Kumar alleged Pinky and his group continued their actions despite being informed that the residents were not from Bangladesh.
An FIR is lodged against Pinky and 20 unidentified individuals, and ACP Srivastav stated that legal action will follow soon.
