Consensus and Confidence: Shiv Sena Leaders Address Waqf Act Amendments

Shiv Sena leaders, including MP Sandipan Bhumre, emphasized the need for consensus and gaining the confidence of the Muslim community before amending the Waqf Act. Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre and other senior party leaders have called for a consensus and the confidence of the Muslim community to be considered before making any amendments to the Waqf Act.

The proposed Bill, which aims to amend legislation governing waqf boards, introduces significant changes such as enhanced representation for Muslim women and non-Muslims. Additionally, it proposes renaming the Waqf Act, 1995, to the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995.

After a heated debate, the Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha and referred to a parliamentary joint committee. The government maintains that the law will not interfere with mosque functions, while the opposition deems it an attack on the Constitution. Shiv Sena leaders emphasized careful deliberation and the consideration of Muslim sentiments to avoid negative perceptions. The Maharashtra State Board of Waqf has benefited recently from government support, as noted by its chairman, Sameer Kazi.
